Sofía Hernández-Chong Cuy

The Fundação Bienal do Mercosul announced on August 13 the appointment of Sofía Hernández-Chong Cuy as new head curator of the Ninth Mercosul Biennial. Hernández will head a curatorial team that includes: Mônica Hoff, Raimundas Malašauskas, and Bernardo de Souza; as well as four curatorial fellows: Júlia Rebouças, Sarah Demeuse, Daniela Pérez, and Dominic Willsdon.

The curatorial proposal for this ninth edition of the Mercosul Biennial will center on communication technology used through the centuries.

The Ninth Mercosul Biennial will open to the public on September 13, 2013. It will consist of four main exhibitions tentatively to be presented at places like Usina do Gasómetro, Museo de Arte Rio Grande do Sul, Santander, and Cultura. Other site specific projects and exhibitions will be announced in the coming months. Nearly 90 artists—regarded as visionaries from the past, present, and future—will participate in the next edition of the Biennial.

Sofía Hernández-Chong Cuy (Mexico) is a writer, curator of contemporary art at the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and member of the advisory research team for the 2013 Venice Biennale. Hernández was director of the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico City (2009-2010), and worked as curator at Arts in General and earlier at the Americas Society, both non-profit organizations in New York City.
