The Argentine artist Silvia Rivas presents “ Chronotopías” (Chronotopies) at the Museo de Arte Moderno in Bogota until October 6 of this year. This exhibition, curated by Eugenio Viola, is the first retrospective in Colombia about the artist.
The title of the show comes from the origin of each of the words that compose it, “chronos” (time) and “topos” (space). The term alludes to how Silvia Rivas' artwork challenges the relationship between time and space, from her explorations of expanded cinema, the limits of video and the creation of multimedia environments.
Since the late 1990s Rivas began to experiment with expressive possibilities related to film, performance elements, installations and multimedia, with the aim of creating innovative works that play with the viewer's perception and the exhibition space. For this reason, she focused on video performance as a format that allowed her to rethink space and time; for example, some of her works question the differences between live actions and pre-recorded images. Thus, Rivas elaborates on the moving image, on temporalities that video allows her to record by capturing gestures and illuminating certain moments.
From this medium of production, the artist reflects on different themes, identity, memory and society. Therefore, her work invites a profound observation of the image, its references, its symbology and the way they are presented in the museum, creating a dialogue with its architecture.
