From October 20 until February 26, 2023, the first exhibition dedicated to Colombian artist María Teresa Hincapié (1954 - 2008) will be presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona - MACBA. This exhibition is a co-production of the Spanish museum with the Museo de Arte Moderno de Medellín - MAMM and is directed by Claudia Segura and Emiliano Valdés.
María Teresa Hincapié is a central figure in bodily art practices. She was dedicated to performance and action art based on profound research that addressed everything from mysticism and movement to everyday acts. She won the First Prize at the XXXIII National Salon of Colombian Artists (Salón Nacional de Artistas Plásticos de Colombia) in 1990 and 1996. On the first occasion, she was awarded the prize for her work A Thing is a Thing (Una cosa es una cosa), a performance that consisted of arranging in an exhibition space all the things the artist had at her house. For several weeks Hincapié danced while she reorganized the objects according to different criteria. This work was the first ephemeral and non-objective work to be recognized at the National Salon of Colombian Artists (Salón Nacional de Artistas Plásticos de Colombia).
The exhibition at MACBA presents a wide selection of works, archive material, videos, and photos, among others, as well as the relevance that the artist gave in her work to the ephemeral and to change in the search for the sacred. It also features works by José Alejandro Restrepo, María José Arjona, Coco Fusco, and Mapa Teatro, which seek to establish different dialogues with Hincapié’s production and legacy.
