Intensive Curatorship Seminar in Argentina

ICI, the independent curators organization, in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires (MACBA), has developed an intensive seminar on art curatorship. The seminar "On curatorship, between theory and practice" will be held between August 18th and 24th, seeks to explore new initiatives in the field of curatorial research, independent projects, collections, institutions, and new financial architectures, among other topics. This is the first Spanish-language seminar organized by ICI, and is intended to provide Spanish-speaking curators an opportunity to share their experiences and exchange ideas, make new contacts, and extend practical and theoretical tools.

The program includes seminars, visits to cultural referents, individual meetings, and discussion roundtables directed by a group of international professionals, among them Magalí Arriola (Curator, Jumex Collection, Ecatepec de Morelos, Mexico), Nami Beckwith ( Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago), Abraham Cruz Villegas (artist), María del Carmen Carrión (Associate Director of Public Programs and Research, ICI, New York), Ana Longoni (independent curator and researcher), Michelle Marxuach (co-director and co founder, Beta-Local, San Juan), Renaud Porch (Executive Director, ICI), and Agustín Pérez Rubio (independent curator and art critic).

To accompany this intensive seminar, ICI and MACBA will publish a book compiling essays relevant to the curatorial practice, most of them translated into Spanish for the first time.

Registration Process

Visit ICI's web page for online registration. Candidates must send a 30-word text about their idea for a project to be advanced during the seminar. This description must outline the concept behind their proposal and specify the names of the artists to be included in it. Registration also requires a brief, 250-word biography, a 500-word letter of intention, and a 300-word description of recent curatorial projects that have influenced the candidate. These materials must be submitted in Spanish.

Fees and scholarships

The fee for the program is US$1,900. Participants are responsible for the cost of travel and housing. A number of scholarships covering the fee, housing, and travel expenses are available, and will be granted on the basis of merit. To apply for one of these scholarships, candidates must include a letter describing their motivation. Scholarships for Latin American curators are generously supported by the Jumex Foundation/Collection. Mexican curators can apply to a scholarship sponsored by Kurimanzutto.

Registration Deadline: June 24th, 2013.
