Chilean artist Seba Calfuqueo presents ANTÜ ÑI KURAM [Huevos del sol / Sun's Egg] at the Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO), her first institutional exhibition. In this show, the Chilean artist explores the tensions between identity, gender and territory from the Mapuche perspective.
The title of the exhibition is a term in Mapudungun, the Mapuche language, which translates as “egg without embryo,” an expression used to disparagingly refer to homosexuality. Calfuqueo wants to re-signify this statement by turning it into a symbol of resistance and pride, as well as stripping it of the ideologies imposed by colonization. Thus, her work explores narratives that were silenced, rethinking the idea of memory and celebrating diversity.
Seba Calfuqueo's work proposes a dialogue between indigenous memory and various contemporary issues. Her work exposes the resistance of her community and the possible ways of being and inhabiting the contemporary world. Some of her works such as Imagen país (Country Image, 2023) refer to ancestral crafts such as ceramics. On the other hand, works such as Esporas (Spores, 2021) and the series Natura (Nature, 2023) reflect on the relationship between the Mapuche people and nature, taking into account issues such as extractivist economic development models based on the exploitation of natural resources. In this way, Calfuqueo proposes an interconnected vision between humans and their environments.
The exhibition will be open to the public until June 1, 2025.
