The Center for Media and Art (ZKM) in the German city of Karlsruhe inaugurated the exhibition "Analivia Cordeiro. From Body to Code," a show that explores the career of the Brazilian artist through her most representative pieces. Cordeiro is a pioneer of video art in Latin America. Since the 1960s she has been producing works that explore the body, movement, technology, and audiovisual art. Her early works have been catalogued as landmark works of video art and computer video dance, and her work was shown in the Hammer Museum's groundbreaking exhibition "Radical Women: Latin American Art, 1960-1985."
In the 1973 edition of the Edinburgh International Festival, Cordeiro presented "M 3x3", a piece in which the movements were calculated by a computer algorithm. This work of art is recognized as the first video artwork produced in South America and one of the first video choreographies. This work will be on display at the ZKM exhibition. For the exhibition, the artist has created interactive installations inviting the viewer to participate actively with the piece on display.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication of a book that explores and makes Cordeiro's work visible, addressing a gap in scholarly research that focuses on situating the work of Latin American women artists in their particular context of production.
The exhibition "Analivia Cordeiro. From Body to Code" will be on view through April 23, 2023.
