26 years after the first José Bedia retrospective organized at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO), the same institution inaugurates "Jose Bedia. Viaje Circular", an exhibition that proposes a journey through the work of the Cuban artist in parallel with the exhibition of ethnographic objects collected by Bedia throughout his career. This collection was assembled during the artist's encounters with different ancestral communities that have been the central axis of exploration and study in his career.
The exhibition was curated by Taiyana Pimentel, director of MARCO, and José Bedia Fuertes, director of the artist's studio. Bedia's works are on display along with 22 ethnographic pieces from his personal collection, including costumes, masks, drums and shields from Africa, Southeast Asia, Oceania, South America and different regions of Mexico. Bedia's interest in ancestral cultures is discussed by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill in a review written for ArtNexus of Bedia's first retrospective at MARCO in 1998, in which she states that "It could be said that Bedia has embarked on a messianic mission as a critic of colonialism and imperialism. Within this context, a crucial element has been his constant preoccupation—initially intuitive and becoming in time more and more conscious and articulate—with projecting a concept of continuity of the past in the present by recovering cultural values that nowadays are denied or shattered." (ArtNexus No.26).
"José Bedia. Circular Journey" was inaugurated on January 27th and can be visited until May of this year.
