Santiago Reyes Villaveces winner of the Leonardo - ASU and the Center for Science and Imagination 2023 Fellowship

Leonordo - ASU [Arizona State University] and the Center for Science and Imagination are pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Imagination Fellowship. 172 candidates from 47 countries applied and the winners are: Santiago Reyes Villaveces, Anita Krauth and Sean Connelly. Their projects explore experimental media addressing several of today's climate challenges, social structures and the preservation of the Earth.
Colombian artist Santiago Reyes Villaveces investigates historical knowledge intertwined with contemporaneous concerns. His work approaches media such as drawing, installation, sculpture, among others. Reyes Villaveces approaches science through Latin American fiction that allows him to examine global scientific norms and non-hegemonic systems of knowledge in order to analyze politics, ecology and social justice. Recently he has become interested in the climate crisis through a study of sound and resonance, linking the echoes of colonialism with current environmental challenges.
For this project Reyes Villaveces wants to create a community-oriented work for the Caribbean region of Colombia, where he combines activism, technology and community art. The work consists of introducing portable devices to the mangrove communities of Cartagena, promoting environmental awareness through immersive audio experiences.
