Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: Los volcanes despiertos (The Awakened Volcanoes)

Chilean artist Sandra Vásquez de la Horra presents her first solo exhibition in Argentina, Los volcanes despiertos (The Awakened Volcanoes), now on view at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba). Curated by Raphael Fonseca, the exhibition brings together a selection of paintings, drawings, and prints, where the artist explores themes such as desire, fear, fantasy, and pleasure, delving into the relationship between the human body and its surroundings. Based in Berlin, Vásquez de la Horra uses drawing in a dynamic way, considering it an essential medium in her work. Her compositions include symbols from various cultures, highlighting female figures that merge with surreal landscapes, intertwining the absurd with expressions of affection and pleasure.
Recognized for her participation in the Venice Biennale and awarded the Käthe Kollwitz Prize in 2023, Vásquez de la Horra has developed an artistic practice that explores mythologies, hybrid plants, and texts in multiple languages. The exhibition is organized into four sections: Late un fuego allí dentro (A Fire Beats Within), which addresses the relationship between the body and the landscape; Botánica de la evolución (Botany of Evolution), which reflects on the cycles of life; Los pensamientos (Thoughts), which examines the interaction between images and writing; and Aguas profundas (Deep Waters), which explores the coexistence between humans, spirituality, and nature.
Los volcanes despiertos (The Awakened Volcanoes) offers a retrospective of more than four decades of the artist’s career, inviting viewers to reflect on the complex relationships between the body, culture, and the natural environment.
The exhibition is on display at Malba since April 11 to July 28, 2025, in Room 3 on Level 1.
