Salam Tristesse, Irak 2016-2020 by Francis Alÿs

The exhibition Salam Tristesse: Irak 2016-2020 by the Belgian-Mexican artist Francis Alÿs presents the work he developed between 2016 and 2020 as an artist of war in Iraq. Curated by Taiyana Pimentel, director of the MARCO Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Monterrey. The exhibition can be visited from Friday, November 27, upon registration at the following link: http://reservas.museonacional.gov.co/
In this exhibition, Alÿs explores the social collapse, meaninglessness, and drama brought about by war. At the same time, with great insight into his own work, he questions the artist's role and prerogatives who document it.
The exhibition, which moves between multiple languages and forms of expression, is made up of the audiovisual pieces Haram Football, Salam Tristesse, Wada'an Tristesse, and Color Matching, as well as other paintings, drawings, interventions on paper and photographs, in addition to different archive materials that will allow the viewer to get closer to the artist's creative process in the various projects he carried out in Iraq. Invited by the Ruya Foundation, Alÿs arrived in Iraq intending to document the forced displacement of the civilian population caused by the Kurdish-Iraqi military offensive against the Islamic State (ISIS). Besides accompanying the Kurdish army for a few days, Peshmerga, in their offensive to liberate the city of Mosul, visited different cities, towns, and refugee camps. More than witnessing the arduous living conditions in these places, Alÿs documents the survival strategies that people develop in the face of the collapse of the social and symbolic order caused by the war.
Fragmentos, Espacio de Arte y Memoria, of the Museo Nacional, is a space committed to the presentation of artistic works and the realization of different cultural activities that promote critical reflection on political violence, memory, and peacebuilding, not only in the Colombian context but also in other parts of the world.
