Sculpture Stolen at the Madrid Abierto 2008 Art Fair

A piece by Peruvian artist Jota Castro was stolen at the Madrid Abierto 2008 Art Fair that opened on February 10, 2008. His project, a 6.5-foot-high, 176-pound golden plastic shower that included a sign reading ¿Please, return the treasure of the Incas¿ was installed on Castellana Street. Although cemented into the floor, this did not prevent the piece from being stolen and then left behind just a couple of yards from where it was originally placed. Although the authorities believe this to be the work of common vandals, the artist suspects municipal employees, as several witnesses have given him accounts like this. Thus, Jota Castro refuses to display the work again despite assurances by the Directivas de Proyectos Culturales del Ayuntamiento (City Hall¿s Board of Directors for Cultural Projects) affirming that all permits are in order for the work to be reinstalled. The Art Fair included projects that speak to problems in the Spanish capital. There are 12 interventions, 12 sound works, and 9 audiovisuals. There are projects such as La Guerra es Nuestra (The War Is Ours) by Annamarie Ho and Imni Lee, which is attached to the façade of the Círculo de Bellas Artes building and which speaks of the war in Iraq but also alludes to other preoccupations spectators may have, such as terrorist acts perpetrated by ETA.
