Roberto Burle Marx at the New York Botanical Garden

On view from through Sunday, September 29, 2019, the New York Botanical Garden will feature the largest botanical show on Brazilian landscape artist Roberto Burle Marx titled " Brazilian Modern: The Living Art of Roberto Burle Marx". Roberto Burle Marx was born in São Paulo in 1909 and died in 1994. He studied painting in Germany where he visited the Berlin-Dahlem Botanical Garden and Museum and learned about Brazil's native flora. Upon his return he studied at The National School of Fine Arts in Rio in 1930 where he focused on visual arts under Leo Putz and Candido Portinari. It was through one of his professors, Brazilian Modernist Lucio Costa, architect and planner, with whom he designed his first landscape for a private residence in 1932. Through his 30-year career Burle Marx is known for having introduced modernist landscape architecture to Brazil while also having great influence on tropical garden design in the 20th Century. His powerful modernist vision produced thousands of gardens and landscapes, including the famous curving mosaic walkways at Copacabana Beach in Rio and the beautiful rooftop garden at Banco Safra in São Paulo. The Garden-wide exhibition at New York Botanical Garden explores through the lush gardens, paintings, drawings, and textiles, the sights and sounds of Brazil that inspired Burle Marx's life and work.
