Reverberaciones: arte y sonido en las colecciones del MUAC(Reverberations: Art and Sound in the MUAC Collections)

The exhibition titled "Reverberations: Art and Sound in the MUAC Collections" at the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) will remain open to the public until July 23. The show is based on a selection of artistic and documental material from the MUAC's archives that are associated with art and sound. The multiplicity of gazes and supports offered challenge viewers to rethinking the boundaries of art as they also start a discussion on the important role of sound in the contemporary artistic practices, with an emphasis on the Mexican scene. Curated by Pilar García and Marco Morales, "Reverberations: Art and Sound in the MUAC Collections" features a selection of 60 sound art works by 32 artists that attest to the increasing interest in sound as a central element that has been contributing contemporary art reflections since the 1960s. But, rather than a historic revision, it is about a selection of works divided into five thematic centers that allow viewers to observe and listen to works in which the acoustic becomes an integral part of the artistic proposal. The sound heard in the exhibition space comes from sculptures, monitors, documentary projections and recording that convey several strategies for approaching sound and its absence. The show includes pieces that become instruments, sound installations, appropriations of musical instruments as artistic objects or works in which sound is formulated through language already as code or in the form of voices that summon memories, as well as social and political denunciations. This auditory universe includes the dimensions of noise and silence, the later represented in two-dimensional works: oils, drawings, photographs, and collages as silent forms of audible expression that evoke music very much in the manner of tributes. Sound as representation of a moment or urban landscape in which noise is part of the city imaginaries, is also a preoccupation in some of the pieces included in the exhibition. The exhibition proposes possible reflections through the literal and metaphoric reverberations and discordances between mediums and artists, proposing possible access paths amid the noise, and away from the category of Sound Art conceived solely as support.
