Restoration of "Horizontes" by Édgar Negret

The Instituto Distrital de Patrimonio Cultural in Bogota invested nearly US$80,000.00 in the recovery and restoration of the work by Édgar Negret that has been part of the Museo Vial on El Dorado Avenue. The intervention of public monuments has been one of the priorities of Enrique Peñalosa's administration, resulting in the recovery of more than 170 monuments. Including Negret's monument, the government of the city of Bogota has restored a total of seven works: Rita 5:30 PM by Enrique Grau, La Gran Cascada (The Great Cascade) also by Édgar Negret, Eclipse by Ángela Gurría, Longos (Long) by Hugo Zapata, Fuente de sesquicentenario (Sesquicentenary Fountain) by Luis Alberto Acuña, and Niño abrazando un ave de marmolería (Child Hugging a Marble Bird) by Tito Ricci. Created in 1994, the work belongs to a period in which Negret explored nature and Pre-Columbian myths. In addition to deterioration as result of corrosion due to environmental exposure, the work by Negret had also been subjected to vandalism. The monument was taken to a workshop where it underwent a process to repair the damages and, to prevent any future issues, it was also sandblasted and treated with anti-corrosive. Then its colors were restored to their original state.
