The international residence program Barracão Maravilha is an open opportunity for artists, curators, and academics from anywhere in the world intent on exploring their practice in a new, dynamic, and challenging context, make new contacts, use new materials, and experience first-hand what it means to live and work in Rio de Janeiro.
This residency is aimed at autonomous professionals who wish to expand their knowledge and challenge their practice on an international level, and who wish to immerse themselves in the fabric of the city, produce new work, and present it.
The program offers a professional mentor active in the contemporary art scene such as a renowned artist or curator. The mentor will follow the artist-in-residence's progress with a view to help them produce a public presentation of the work resulting from the residency, which can be in the format of a text, exhibition, talk or workshop.
In 2011, the Barracão Maravilha studio grew to occupy the entire building and started to invite other artists to work in the space. The organization also has a vast portfolio in the management of large-scale cultural projects for public and private clients, such as the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio de Janeiro, the World Nature Fund, OESTUDIO, the Palmares Cultural Foundation, and the Western Cape Government.
The studio features two open-plan rooms distributed in two floors and the ground level, where the gallery, which extends al the way to the main avenue, is located. Work spaces are flexible and adapt to each artists and to the needs of their individual projects. The studio is well lit, with adequate conditions for varied productions and wi-fi connection for the whole building. Associated artists work in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, new technology, performance, and public interventions. The gallery space is available for use by the artist-in-residence, as long as this use is mentioned in the proposal.
