The Triennale of Milan and the MAXXI Museo Nazionale Delle Arti del XXI secolo in Roma, sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT), held the first edition of the 2020 Italiano di Architettura Award on June 30th. It awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award to the architect Renzo Piano (Genoa, Italy 1937) for his invaluable legacy to the world of architecture.
The Italian Architecture Award will be held annually to "promote architecture produced by Italian designers and architects and those working in Italy with a focus on innovation, quality design, and the social role of architecture."
The Lifetime's recognition was announced on June 18th, in streaming by Giovanna Melandri, president of the MAXXI Foundation, Stefano Boeri, president of the Triennale Milano and Margherita Guccione, general director of contemporary creativity of MiBACT, together with Renzo Piano, during the online festival "Una Storia per il Futuro," the digital marathon that celebrated the 10th anniversary of MAXXI.
The decision of the international jury was unanimous. They considered not only the incomparable buildings of Renzo Piano but also "the professional and civic commitment that has marked and continues to mark the architectural production of Piano, and his persevering work of promoting the qualities and public value of architecture in all tribunes to which you have access."
