Commissioned by the Asociación de Amigos y Patronos of the Biblioteca Mario de Andrade, with the support of the Banco Itaú under the Cultural Incentive Law of the Ministry of Culture (MinC), the installation Paraler consists of a mosaic of nearly one thousand square meters (10,764 square feet) that surrounds the Mário de Andrade Library in downtown São Paulo. In this mosaic the world library appears written in several languages and it is rendered using the cross stitch embroidery technique. The work is made of nearly two million porcelain pieces specially cut for the project. Designed to resist heavy traffic, the work was constructed to become a perennial presence in the contemporary urban imaginary. According to Silveira, "Paraler was conceived to function as a sort of multicultural logo." This work reflects a wide-ranging and committed approach to culture, a characteristic aspect of this artist's work. Regina Silveira was born in Porto Alegre in 1939, and is currently based in São Paulo, Brazil. More information about Silveira is available online at
