On its second edition, the MASP Award for the Visual Arts is already consolidated as an important contribution to Brazilian art, according to the Director of the Museum, Beatriz Pimienta-Camargo. In terms of financial support, the award is at the level of other important recognitions around the world and focuses on recognizing the effort, talent and commitment of creators that stand out for their formal abilities and performance as visual artists. The Award is made possible through the joint initiative by the board of directors of the Museum, in collaboration with Itaú Unibanco and the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, in an effort to showcase innovative contemporary art productions in Brazil. The selection committee included Mari Carmen Ramírez, from the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (MFAh); Luis Pérez-Oramas, curator of the Museum of Modern (MoMA) in New York, and of the 30th São Paulo Biennial, in 2012; Ricardo Resende of the Centro Cultural São Paulo; and Marcio Doctors from the Fundação Eva Klabin, in Rio de Janeiro. For the 2013 edition, the event introduced a new category called Lifetime Achievement Award, which on this occasion was presented to artist Regina Silveira. This prominent representative of contemporary art in the field of multimedia has been part of the history of the Itaú Cultural. Created 26 years ago, the institution was developed with the goal of improving the lives of citizens by ensuring access to art and culture. Since the institute opened, Regina Silveira has been close to all of its activities and has collaborated with her work for national and international exhibitions. The Best Exhibition of the Year Award went to artist Odires Mlászho, for her show Zero Sustantive, which consisted of poetic impressions presented as collages, altered ready-mades and digital images. The Best Emerging Talent Award was granted to Rodrigo Braga, whose prominent participation in the São Paulo Biennial, centered in his harsh questioning of the animal and natural dimensions and of the human existence, based on photographs, videos and performances. Three artists that were awarded in Itaú Cultural exhibited their works until December of 2013. An accompanying catalog in Portuguese and English was also published to accompany the exhibition of works that are now part of the MASP's collection.
