A Work by Lygia Clark sets New Record at Auction

On May 23 the Philips Auction House, in New York City, auctioned the work Contra Revelo (Objeto N. 7) by Brazilian Lygia Clark (1920-1988) for a record price.

Estimated by the auction house to be worth somewhere between USD $600,000.00 and USD $800,000.00, the piece by Clark sold for USD $2,225,000.00, setting a new record as Clark's most expensive piece sold at auction.

Contra Revelo (Objeto N. 7) is a black and white rhomboid-shaped piece that was created in 1959 with plywood and industrial paint. It measures 21 7/8 x 21 7/8 x 1 3/4 in. (55.5 x 55.5 x 4.5 cm.). The rear section of the sculpture is entitled (Objecto N. 7) and it is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

The work was previously exhibited in Bahia, Convento do Carmo, Brazil, during the First Visual Arts Biennial celebrated in December of 1966.
