The earthquakes that occurred in Puerto Rico at the beginning of January of this year caused visible damage to the main building of the Museo de Arte de Ponce. These deterioration are mainly concentrated on the second floor of the original building and correspond primarily to fractures and detachment walls and sections of the decorative ceiling.
From the collection of around 4,500 pieces, two 17th-century sculptures suffered repairable damage and are currently understudying and restoration at the Conservation Center. The Portrait of Henri de la Tour D’Auvergne Turenne, a bronze bust of Jérôme Derbais, and Heraclitus, a white marble bust of Orazio Marinali. The rest of the collection is safe and safeguarded
The Museo de Arte de Ponce hired the services of a structural engineering company in California. The progress of the studies indicates the need to carry out a restructuring of the Durell Stone building to guarantee the safety of its users and the collection. This area must remain closed to the public. However, the Museo de Arte de Ponce will continue to be open to its community through its initiative “The Museum goes out to the streets,” which, since January, has given workshops in shelters and schools to more than 1,400 people from seven municipalities in the southwest of the island. A gathering center was also established where donations of personal hygiene items were received that benefited approximately 70 families from the Municipality of Guayanilla.
Upon establishing the Executive Order for the control of the pandemic in Puerto Rico, the Museo de Arte de Ponce expanded its digital platform through a series of projects connecting with an audience of approximately 734,000 people since March called ConectARTE. The project offers the public a daily and varied program that includes capsules on the Museum’s permanent collection, workshops of learning, interaction, and dialogue in its mission to promote culture, reflection, and the general well-being of its community.
