Ralph Rugoff

Thierry Raspail, artistic director of the Lyon Biennial, has announced the appointment of Ralph Rugoff as the curator for the next edition of the event, to be held in 2015. Rugoff, an American, has been the director of Hayward Gallery in London since 2006, curating thematic exhibitions such as Psycho Buildings: Artists Take On Architecture and The Painting of Modern Life, as well as monographic shows devoted to Ed Ruscha, George Condo, Jeremy Deller, and Tracey Emin. Before joining Hayward, Rugoff was the director of the Wattis Institute in San Francisco, between 2000 and 2006, where he also organized a dozen exhibitions, among them solo shows by Mike Kelley, Roni Horn, Thomas Hirschhorn, Mike Nelson, and Ann Veronica Janssens. Rugoff was an independent curator and critic, and organized such exhibitions for Serpentine Gallery in London as The Greenhouse Effect (2000), or Scene of the Crime (1996) for the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, among others. He was also an advisor for the Sydney Biennial in 2002 and the Torino Triennial in 2005. Recently, Rugoff was a juror for the 2013 Turner Prize, and in 2010 he was a member of the British Council's selection committee for the Venice Biennale. In 2005 he received the first Art Criticism and Curatorship Award given by the Penny McCall Foundation.
