Rafael Trelles

Rafael Trelles is known as one of the highlight painters in the country. His surrealist works are made from blots through which he develops his imagery and conception. Since 2004 his work has turned into a conceptual one, still holding his ideas about perception of things that are hidden or revealed to us. In concrete, consists of a series of engravings made upon surfaces that time and yeast have obscured. For these unconventional engravings, Trelles uses a pressure hose and plastic templates. Once the water pressure is applied on the template placed on the sidewalk or on the wall, it creates an impressive aesthetic and at the same time it produces messages to be deciphered. By means of this procedure, the artist enters an experimental process in which action becomes performance and the finished work is mortal. Thus Trelles creates his works in collaboration with two other artists; Roberto ¿Tito¿ Otero who takes register of the process and then edits a documentary and John Betancourt who shoots the photographs that later become the final work. For the Art Circle work, Trelles altered the Eastern sidewalk of Museo de Arte de Ponce. He used the image of a hexagon, an icon of the museums logo and deconstructed, reformulate and rebuilt it. You may enjoy the whole process in the documentary by Roberto Otero and the enigmatic photograph taken by Betancourt and conceptualized by Trelles.
