First Residence of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation

In November 2004, the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (Fundación de Arte Cisneros Fontanals - CIFO) convened its residency program. As a result the artists Jarbas Lopez (Brazil) and Tomas Saraceno (Argentina) were the first two to be awarded. The foundation offers the residency to artists from Latin America who do not live in the United States. The program includes a study and a living space in Miami for three months, propagating and stimulating a cultural exchange. As a result of his stay in CIFO, Tomas Saraceno produced the project When Spheres Meet Spheres from Miami to Cuba, a piece that integrates art, architecture and science. The piece is formed of ten dodecahedrons that together form a sculpture of approximately 24 x 14 x 14 feet that is suspended above the ocean; whilst the work by Jarbas Lopez, is a series of pieces resulting from the balance between a critical and aesthetic approximation of society. The artists are proposed by a Nomination Committee composed of prestigious curators and artists, and the final selection is made by the Foundation¿s Directive Board. The committee in 2004 was integrated by Tobia Ostrander, curatoe of the Tamayo Museum, Mexico; Inés Katzenstein, curator of the Museum of Latin American Art in Buenos Aires; Beatriz Milhazes, Brazilian artist; and the artist Francis Alys de Bélgica, Mexico.
