The first Malta Biennial is taking place from March 11 to May 31, 2024. Italian curator Sofia Baldi Pighi titled the event that is mainly in the city of Valletta, "Insulaphilia." 72 artists from over 30 countries are participating in the inaugural edition.
"Insulaphilia" is divided into four sections that explore: regional issues, decolonization, political issues in the Mediterranean and different forms of resistance. The central theme of the biennial is inspired by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze who determines that an island contains "the intensity of the world itself." Pighi argues that the exhibition investigates insular thinking, moving away from the "utopian postcard" appearance and focusing on the boundaries that lead to certain knowledge and encounters.
Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Peru and Mexico are some of the Latin American countries that have representatives in the event. The participation of artist and activist Tania Bruguera, who explores concepts such as power and control through performance and the construction of large-format installations, has been highlighted. Likewise, the presence of Golden Lion winner Cecilia Vicuña, who works on themes such as memory and exile, is one of the event's expectations.
The Latin American artists participating are: Andrea Ferrero, Cecilia Vicuña, Daniel Jablonski, Guadalupe Maravilla, Luz Lizarazo, Pedro Reyes, Simon Benjamin and Tania Bruguera: Andrea Ferrero, Cecilia Vicuña, Daniel Jablonski, Guadalupe Maravilla, Luz Lizarazo, Pedro Reyes, Simon Benjamin and Tania Bruguera.
