Claude Bussac, Director of PhotoEspaña announced the winners of the PhotoEspaña 2011 Awards. The PhotoEspaña Prize 2011 went to photographer Thomas Ruff (Zell am Harmersbach, Germany, 1968), who received the recognition for the precise and coherent artistic personality that has gained him international prominence. For his part, photographer Chema Madoz was awarded the Bartolomé Ros Prize for Best Spanish Professional Trajectory. The jury decided to bestow this prize to Madoz in recognition of the originality of his work and the solidity of an artistic trajectory that relies on a conceptual language. The PHE Discoveries Prize for best portfolio when to photographer Fernando Brito (Mexico, 1975) for his work Tus Pasos se Perdieron con el Paisaje (Your Steps Were Lost in the Landscape), a series that consists of images of corpses and crime scenes that are the result of the pervasive violence that afflicts several regions across Mexico. Through his work, Brito reflects and denounces the way in which death becomes an everyday event that is integrated into the Mexican landscape. The series attempts to raise awareness and reflection on the violent situation of his country. The Galería Helga de Alvear was recognized with the Festival Off Prize for the exhibition entitled Ten Thousand Waves by Isaac Julien. The award is presented to one of the Festival Off galleries, after evaluating the proposal that fuels the exhibition, the artistic value of the authors, and the works exhibited, as well as the efforts by the gallery to present a specific project for PhotoEspaña 2011. Finally, the Best Photography Book of the Year Prize invites independent editors and publishing houses to present photography books published during the previous year. On this occasion, the Best Photography Book of the Year Prize, in the Category of Best National Photography Book, went to the book Europa, by Bernard Plossu, co-edited by the Fundación Santander in collaboration with La Fábrica Editorial.
