The Mislata Miquel Navarro Biennial Acquisition Awards open call for visual arts with social commitment until October 7. An initiative of the BMMN Biennial of Mislata Miquel Navarro convened by the Department of Culture of the City of Mislata. The call aims to select ten works, awarding two acquisition prizes with € 6,000 and eight exhibition prizes that will receive an amount of € 500 to cover expenses for participation. The ten works will be part of an exhibition at the Carmen Alborch Cultural Center in December 2021 and in February 2022 in Mislata. Alba Braza curates the BMMN 21 edition.
According to the rules of the call, the jury made up of art experts and institutional representatives will give special attention to those works that reflect on change and transformation by considering interpretations of the causes and consequences of mutations in different areas (personal, social, urban or environmental). The media and technique of the works is free, but they must necessarily be anchored to the wall.
The call is open to any natural or legal person of lawful age, nationality, or residence. With this initiative, the City Council of Mislata aims to grow the municipal contemporary art collection, which already has some of the most prominent names in the national art scene.
Since 2016, Mislata has recovered an original initiative from four decades ago. The Biennial has been sponsored by the internationally renowned local artist Miquel Navarro, who still resides in the municipality, and whose workshop will be converted into the cultural venue of the already existing Miquel Navarro Foundation in the coming years.
It is worth remembering that the Mislata Biennial is presented in a call with acquisition awards (in odd-numbered years) and public art awards (in even-numbered years). The previous edition of visual arts with social commitment addressed the theme of memory. The last call for public art, in 2020, due to the special conditions of this pandemic, showed five installations in the urban scene, which can be visited until 2022.
