Rufino Tamayo Biennial Prizes

The Rufino Tamayo Biennial opened at the MACO with the exhibition of the 51 works selected, among them those by the event's three prize winners. The awards are funded by the government of the state of Oaxaca, the INBA, and the Olga and Rufino Tamayo Foundation, A. C. Emi Winter, Jacqueline Judith, and Roberto Rébora were the winners of the 15th Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial, presented at an award ceremony and show opening on November 9th, 2011, at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca (MACO). Winter presented Nube (2011), acrylic on canvas, 200 x 170 cm; Lozano¿s work is Pirámide devastada (2011), unstuck masking tape, oil and enamel on cloth-covered panel, 170 x 120 cm; and Rébora won with Isla de mujeres (2011), tempera on canvas, 180 x 190 cm. The winners received 150,000 pesos each. The jury also gave honorary commendations to Parangón Menina (2010), by Luis Hampshire, oil on magazine pages, 28 x 21 cm, and Destrucción compositiva. Los profetas del apocalípsis (2011), by Guanajuato artist Oscar Rafael Soto, enamel, oil, acrylic, and solvent on wood, 122 x 200 cm. This year, the jury was composed of Carmen Cerberus, curator and art critic; Melanie Smith, artist; Teresa Velázquez, artist (winner at the 12th Rufino Tamayo Biennial); Germán Venegas, artist (honorary commendation at the 1st Rufino Tamayo Biennial); and Jorge Contreras, director of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca.
