AICA-Venezuela 2011 Awards

Formed by Katherine Chacón, Susana Benko, and Roldán Esteva-Grillet, the organizing committee of the AICA-Venezuela Awards gave artist Julio Pacheco-Rivas the AICA-Venezuela 2011 "Acclaimed Master Award."

Antonio Briceño received the "Acclaimed Young Talent Award," and Armando Rosales won the "Emerging Artist Award." The "Special AICA Award" was posthumously given to Rubén Núñez for his pioneering work in the visual arts and design fields in Venezuela. Other Awards were also presented to Luis Molina-Pantin, for his vast international trajectory; to Magdalena Fernández, who won in the category of Best Exhibition of the Year; and the Colección Mercantil was recognized for its institutional work. Likewise, the Salón Municipal de Pintura in the Girardot municipality of Maracay (state of Aragua) was awarded for its promotion of the Venezuelan visual arts. This year, the jury decided to diversify the Award to incorporate several award categories that recognize the work done by art publications. In the category of "Critical Mention," Bélgica Rodriguez was recognized for her book entitled Wladimir Zabaleta; Carmen Hernández received the "Research Mention," for her book Diamela Eltit y Paz Errázuriz. Urgencia y Emergencia de una Postura Artística en el Chile Postgolpe (1983-1994); the "Heritage Mention" went to the Catálogo General Colección Palacio Federal Legislativo y Arte, Independencia y República. Cinco Escenas sobre la Configuración de la República a Partir de la Colección Palacio Federal Legislativo; the Biblioteca Biográfica Venezolana, Edición El Nacional/Fundación Bancaribe, received the "Art Promotion Mention;" the "Art Publication for Children Mention" was awarded to Edición Editemos, for its book Arte & Punto. Conceptos Básicos de Arte; and the "Catalog Mention" was awarded to the catalog created by the Museo Sefardí "Morris E. Curiel" /Museo Kern, in Caracas, for the exhibition Walter Margulis. An Abstract Spirit, with a text written by Federica Palomero.

A Special Recognition was awarded to art critic and friend Willy Aranguren, who recently died.
