Awards 60th International Art Exhibition, the Venice Biennale

The opening and awards ceremony, which takes place every two years during the Venice Biennale, was held on April 20.
The prizes awarded during the ceremony were Golden Lion for the best national participation, which was awarded to Australia. The work "kith and kin" by the artist of Bigambal, Kamilaroi, and British descent Archie Moore was the winner. The entry consists of a genealogical map tracing a sixty-five-thousand-year period through the First Nations family tree. Special mention in this award category went to the installation by Doruntina Kastrati, from the Republic of Kosovo, which refers to women's industrial work and the wear and tear on the bodies of working women.
Golden Lion for Best Participant in the international exhibition went to the Maori women's collective from New Zealand, Mataaho Mamaori, made up of artists Bridget Reweti, Erena Baker, Terri Te Tau, and Sara Hudson, with the work "Takapau," with textile references that created a huge installation that "refers to ancestral techniques and points to future uses of these techniques."
The Silver Lion for a Promising Young Participant went to the Nigerian Karimah Ashadu; and two special mentions were given to the Argentine La Chola Poblete, the first queer artist awarded at the Biennial, and the American-Palestinian Samia Halaby.
Artists Anna Maria Maiolino and Nil Yalter received the important Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award. The decision was approved by the Biennial's Board of Directors, headed by Roberto Ciccuto, on the recommendation of Adriano Pedrosa, curator of this year's edition.
The biennial can be visited until November 24, 2024. For more information, visit https://www.labiennale.org/en.
