Peter C. Marzio Award

The International Center for the Arts of the Americas - ICAA of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, calls for participation for the 2022 Peter C. Marzio Award for "Notable Research in Latin American and Latino Art."
The Peter C. Marzio Award, honors the former director of the MFAH, under whose tenure the ICAA was established in 2001. The Award recognizes innovative scholarship applied to modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art.
An award of $2,500 for graduate students and $1,000 for undergraduate students is given to those who write an outstanding academic paper based on the primary source materials available from the digital archive Documents of Latin American and Latino Art and its companion book series, Critical Documents of 20th‐Century Latin American and Latino Art. The papers will be reviewed by an award committee composed of faculty members in the ICAA network of scholars. The two selected essays will be published in the digital Working Papers series.
The funding for the Award has been provided by The Transart Foundation for Art and Anthropology, Houston, a private, non-profit organization that supports the creative process of contemporary artists and scholars who integrate advanced and relevant social, anthropological, or cultural research in their work.
The deadline is June 1, 2022. Award recipients will be announced in September 2022.
The papers may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Authors are required to utilize a minimum of 5 sources (for graduate essays) and 2 sources (for undergraduate essays) in the digital archive and should engage with materials substantively (e.g., in what ways are the cited archival sources pertinent to the argument or methodology), rather than merely mention them. Please include a list of citations from the digital archive in the application form.
Under no circumstances should submissions be published, nor should they be tentatively submitted to any publication before the winners of the Award have been announced. Submissions that were written more than two years before the application will not be considered.
Students are strongly encouraged to proofread their submissions by their academic advisor and at least one other editor who is proficient in the language. A brief Letter of Support (included in the application form) must be completed by the academic advisor stating they have reviewed the essay, confirm that it has not or will not be published elsewhere, and confirm that the student is in good standing in an academic program.
