The MAPFRE Foundation awarded the Penagos Prize for Drawing to Venezuelan artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, in recognition of his career achievements and his contributions to drawing as a genre in the visual arts.
The prize, which includes a 30,000-euro award, was presented by Alberto Manzano, president of the Foundation, in an act at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.
The Penagos Prize for Drawing was established in 1982 in memory of Madrid artist Rafael de Penagos, perhaps the greatest representative of the movement that renewed Spanish graphic illustration during the 1920s and 1930s.
The Prize is awarded annually. Initially, it functioned as an open call, but since 2008 it is awarded in recognition to an outstanding living artist active in the genre.
