In 2009, the fifth edition of the Luis Caballero Award will take place at the Galería Santa Fe in Bogotá. The mission of this award, which commenced in 1996, is to show the works of artists over 35 years old whose projects relate to the plastic and spatial characteristics of this Gallery. Owing to the careers of the artists presented and the consistency and lucidity of the arguments contained in the proposals, this prize has become one of the most important awards for art in Colombia. Through these doors have passed artists of the caliber of Víctor Laignelet, Luis Roldán, María Elvira Escallón, and Fernando Uhía, all previous winners of the award. In this fifth edition, the jury comprises María Clara Bernal, José Ignacio Roca, and Juan Fernando Herrán, who have been assigned to select six artists, after the call process initiated in 2008. Luis Fernando Ramírez, Catalina Mejía, Mario Opazo, and Fernando Pertúz are four of the artists who have exhibited their works during the year; currently exhibiting is Rosario López and, beginning November 18, the final artist, Nelson Vergara, will be presented. Each of these selected artists received the sum of $15.000.000 for the respective montage of his/her project. This Award is promoted by the Secretary of Culture, Recreation, and Sports, and the Plastic Arts Management of the Gilberto Alzate Avendaño Foundation. This year, the winner will receive an award of $50.000.000.
