La Joven Estampa (The Young Imprint) Prize

La Casa de las Américas calls for young Latin American and Caribbean engraving artists to participate in the 10th edition of La Joven Estampa Prize. This biennial competition aims to disseminate knowledge and promote works by young engraving artists, and to bring these together without restricting the styles or techniques of the most recent productions in this artistic discipline, which is so imbedded in the continent. La Joven Estampa Prize will be presented at the Casa de las Américas in May 2009. The 2009 Casa de las Américas La Joven Estampa Prize is open to engravers born or naturalized in any Latin American or Caribbean country. Participants must be 35 years of age or younger. Each artist may submit no more than three works employing the same or different techniques. Experimental and three-dimensional proposals are welcomed. Two-dimensional works must be sent unframed, will not be printed in supports larger than 75 × 110 cm, and the series is required to be duly signed and numbered. Three-dimensional works must not be larger than 3 square meters after being mounted. Participants must send the following documentation with their works: a brief Curriculum Vitae, and a fact sheet written in pencil on the back of the work that includes name of author, title of work, technique, work dimensions and date created, and mounting instructions for the work. No author can participate with works that have been previously awarded national or international prizes. The jury panel consists of three prominent personalities in the field of printmaking. They will be responsible for selecting the works that will participate in the exhibit and for awarding the prize. Works must be sent or delivered in person to the addresses mentioned in section 7 of the bases prior to April 10, 2009. The best group will receive 3,000 USD or its equivalent in the corresponding national currency. The artist receiving the award will have a solo exhibit in Havana during the 11th Edition of the La Joven Estampa Prize. The work chosen for the award will become part of the Arte de Nuestra América Haydeé Santamaría Collection that belongs to the organizing institution. The prize, the honorable mentions, and other works selected by the jury will be announced on May 28 during the inauguration of the exhibit resulting from the competition. The exhibit will be held at the Latin American Gallery of the Casa de las Américas for a three-month period that begins with the Inaugural Ceremony.
