International Prize for Cultural Innovation

The International Prize for Cultural Innovation is a new biennial event established by the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona (CCCB) in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The purpose is to provide stimulus for projects that explore cultural scenarios in the near future through research and practice. The project selected will receive funding in the amount of 10,000 Euros. The theme for the 2014-2015 edition is "Public/s". Ultimately, the International Cultural Innovation Prize emerged from the conviction that there exists a great reserve of creativity within cultural institutions as well as outside them. Building bridges between citizen's innovation abilities and the knowledge and experience accumulated by the institutions serving them is one of the central ideas behind this prize. Authors applying for the prize must submit a creation, production, and/or cultural-content presentation project whose format, topic, and/or management mechanisms respond in innovative ways to the following questions, or related ones: What are we to understand today for public/s in cultural centers, museums, and similar spaces? What is the meaning of such a concept at a time when the borders between physical and virtual space dissolve or merge? Has the classical paradigm according to which the public followed or at most participated —albeit always in a secondary position— in the proposals of such centers or museums, been altered? What are the new models currently applied in this realm? What are the actual needs of these new publics? Do centers and museums satisfy them? What innovations can they introduce in order to accomplish their goals? What changes are needed to confront the challenge posed by the public/s in the immediate future? Submissions must have a theoretical foundation and include an analysis of the concrete space they are intended for, following the structure established in the guidelines. The jury will be comprised of Marcos García, director of MediaLab, Prado; Nina Simon, director of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH), in California, USA; Mark Miller, coordinator of programs for younger audiences at Tate, London, UK, and national director of the institution's Circuit program; Johan Moerman, director of Rotterdam Festivals; Conxa Rodà, chief of Strategy and Communication at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), in Barcelona, Spain; and Juan Insua, of the CCCB, where he has worked since 1993 in a variety of positions and responsibilities. They will select the most innovative project following mainly the following criteria: originality of the proposal; conceptual and methodological rigor; innovation in the modes of relating to the public; transversality of actions and methods; social impact; viability of the project. Deadline for submissions is February 5. The complete guidelines and submission forms can be found at www.innovationcccb.org
