Intended to reaffirm and expand the educational capabilities of museums and of cultural patrimony as a strategy for the transformation of social reality, the Ibermuseos Program has launched the 6th edition of the Ibero-American Award for Education and Museums. Eight educational projects by Latin American museum institutions will receive the award. Nominations for this 6th edition are open through June 18, 2015, and can be submitted via the Award's web page.* Categories – The Ibero-American Award for Education and Museums will recognize initiatives that promote personal development and social cohesion, in two categories: Category I – Projects completed or ongoing, Category II – Promotion of projects in their formulation and/or planning stage. For the former, there will be three awards; for the latter, five. The total amount of the combined awards will be US$ 75,000. Honorary mentions will be given to 20 more projects. To participate, institutions must be cultural, educational, or similar in character, and be connected to the public sector (municipal, regional, or national) or to the non-profit private sector. In its prior five editions, the Ibermuseos Program awarded 37 Latin American projects with a total of US$ 215,000. Its actions are intended to consolidate the Ibero-American Museum Network, formed by the 22 countries of the Ibero-American community, and its main goals are: to strengthen public museum policies in the Ibero-American countries; to establish exchange mechanisms between museums; to promote the education and training of professionals in the field; to create mechanisms for expanding the educational capabilities of musems; to promote the circulation of holdings and exhibitions; to promote the protection and management of the museums' patrimony; to foster research in the museum field; to stimulate the right to memory among different ethnic groups and genders, social collectives and movements, supporting actions of social appropriation of patrimony and enhancing the appreciation of the different kinds of museums. It is currently presided by Brazil, where its Technical Unit is located. This Unit is responsible for the execution of the lines of action established by the Intergovernmental Committee. The Ibermuseos Program is connected to the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) and has the technical support of the Ibero-American Organization of States for Education, Science, and Culture (OEI) and the Brazilian Museum Institute (IBRAM/Minc), as well as Spain's International Development Cooperation Agency (Aecid).
