For eight years in a row the Museo de Artes Visuales (MAVI) and Minera Escondida—operated by BHP Billiton—have joined efforts to present a new version of the MAVI-Minera Escondida Young Art Award, a competition for young Chilean talents in the area of the visual arts.
The competition aims at finding emerging artists in Chile and creating platforms to project works and to reward, encourage and promote innovations by young artists.
The call is open to Chilean visual artists who are under 35 years all by the closing of the call on November 12 of 2013.
Formed by María Irene Alcalde, Curator of the Colección MAVI; artists Cristián Salineros, Teresa Gacitúa and Rodrigo Bruna; along with international curator, Teacher and Independent Curator, Rodrigo Alonso, the jury will be responsible for the pre-selection of 50 works. This selection will be announced on Monday, December 9, 2013 at www.mavi.cl.
The award ceremony and inaugural exhibition that showcases the finalist works will take place at the MAVI on Friday, January 17 of 2014. On that day, the winner of the First Prize will receive the MAVI award that consists of 3,000,000.00 Chilean Pesos (about USD 6,000.00), along with the right to present a solo show at the MAVI. The Second Prize will receive a purse of 2,000,000.00 Chilean pesos (about USD 4,000.00), along with the right to present a solo show at the MAVI. The Third Prize will get a purse of 1,000,000.00 Chilean pesos (about USD 2,000.00). There will also be three Honorable Mentions, each accompanied by a purse of 300,000.00 Chilean pesos (about USD 600,000.00), one of which will go to a regional participant.
