The Herb Alpert Foundation in collaboration with the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) announced the winners of the 21st edition of the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts. The recognition was granted to five mid-career artists "for the complexity, longevity, and urgency of their work, for their strong formal clarity and continuing contribution to international conversations on freedom of speech and illegal immigration." The award recognizes the artistic trajectory and future promise of creators working in several artistic disciplines, including visual arts. In this category the jury gave the award to Tania Bruguera (Cuba) "for her commitment to resisting market pressures in order to seek an ethics of what art can do," and in recognition of "the innovative ways she has reinvented the language of activism within contemporary culture." The award recipients in the other four categories were: Maria Hassabi (Dance), Sharon Lockhart (Film/Video), Julia Wolfe (Music), and Taylor Mac (Theatre). Each artist awarded will receive a purse of USD $75,000.00.
