AICA France 2014 Art Criticism Award

On March 14, 2014 AICA France organized at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Award Ceremony of the 2014 Art Criticism Award, a ceremony presided over by Marek Bartelik, President of AICA International. Already in its third edition, the Award represents to AICA France a way to expand the visibility of the work developed by its members, as it also underscores the important role of critics in the selection of artists. The winning critic will be published in the French periodical Art Press and will present an exhibition of his/her chosen artist at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Saint Etienne that will be accompanied by a publication. The jury panel is formed by members from ten countries: Canada, Croatia, United States, France, Luxembourg, Pakistan, The United Kingdom, Sweden, Turkey and Brazil—represented by its President, Lisbeth Rebollo. The jury listened to the public presentation of ten French art critics, each offering the work by one of the 10 artists selected that reside in France. All excellent, both because of the quality of the texts and of the artists selected, the interventions consisted of a very codified representation in accordance with the PechaKucha principle (20 images, 6 minutes and 40 seconds). The Award was granted to Marc Lenot, a graduate from MIT and today an art critic, who presented the work of Latin American artist Estefanía Peñafiel-Loaiza, the sole foreign artist presented in the event. Born in 1978, in Quito, Ecuador, Peñafiel-Loaiza is a conceptual and video artist who lives and works in Paris, where she completed her studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. "Estefanía Peñafiel-Loaiza's work is like that of an 'archeologist of images.' In the shadows, she is not interested in the things that are visible in an image but in those things that are hidden behind it." (Latest solo exhibition in 2012, during the month of May, at the Centre d'Art Villa du Parc, Anemasse, France; and at Sala Proceso in Cuenca, Ecuador, during the month of April).
