On August 13th, the show Pierre Verger: Journeys and Memories opened to the public at Instituto Tomie Ohtake. This exhibition is co-realized by Instituto Tomie Ohtake, the Fundação Pierre Verger and Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, integrating the network of the 34th Bienal de São Paulo partner exhibitions. Based on an immersion of Pierre Verger (1902-1996) archives, notes, records and writings, the show is the first to present him as a photographer, researcher, ethnographer and also a religious leader.
Curated by Priscyla Gomes, from the Instituto Tomie Ohtake, and Alex Baradel, from the Fundação Pierre Verger, the show is dedicated to exhibiting varied documentation of Verger’s travels, using these journeys to narrate the pioneering spirit present in many of his approaches while photographing, recording, and investigating the places he visited, also showing his way of establishing dialogues with distinct populations. The exhibition will be open until November 21st.
The 34th Bienal was conceived to expand in space – extending through partnerships with more than 20 cultural institutions in the city of São Paulo.
