Photographs by Filmmaker Luis Buñuel

The exhibit titled México Fotografiado por Luis Buñuel (Mexico Photographed by Luis Buñuel) will be presented at the Palacio Perale ¿ where the Filmoteca Nacional de España (National Film Archives of Spain) is located ¿ on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of this actor, director, and screenwriter. The exhibit includes nearly one thousand photographs belonging to the legacy left behind by Luis Buñuel; among these, there are photographs Buñuel took while searching for on-site exterior locations for some of the movies he filmed in Mexico. The condition of some of these photographs reflects how little Buñuel thought of them, as they were not dated, a few even have writings on them, and instead of being stored properly they were kept in envelopes inside a file box. It is possible that the filmmaker had taken these photographs with a small camera without reflecting on their artistic value while he traveled and filmed his movies. Linking each photograph with a particular movie frame began as a game for the curatorial team. Because the photographs were untitled or not classified, the team was required to go through many of Buñuel¿s movies for identification of frames and locations. Thanks to this curatorial dedication, each photograph now stands in tandem with a film frame that reflects its origin. Buñuel amazes us with his precision: of the twenty movies he filmed in Mexico between 1947 and 1965, twelve are represented in his photographs. The exhibit will be open through the month of October.
