María García-Yelo, director of PHotoEspaña, announced Chilean artist Paz Errázuriz as the winner of the yearly award, in recognition of the professional trajectory of a prominent figure in the field of national or international photography. PHotoEspaña recognizes in Errázuriz the "rigor, empathy and respect with which the author has portrayed contemporary life, through social groups as diverse as boxers past their prime, stigmatized travesties, the sick confined to psychiatric centers, nudes sculpted by age, melancholic tango dancers or circus performers that make her an iconic and highly singular international photographer." The Festival also notes that "her work, the result of intense immersions into the spaces and contexts that she captures, attains a perfect balance between documentation and aesthetic experimentation which attests to a complex society shown in brief instants and minimal but accurate and universalizing gestures."
