Pável Aguilar among the winners of the Kunstkredit Basel-Standt 2020

With the Fuga y Bâton Politique project, the artist Pável Aguilar (Honduras), won the annual Kunstkredit Basel-Standt 2020 award, in the Werkbeiträge (Work Grants) modality.
The Werkbeiträge was awarded by the jury to eight artists: Pavel Aguilar (he was the only Latin American among the list of participants), Franziska Baumgartner, Franziska Furter, Chantal Küng, Barbara Maria Meyer, Katrin Niedermeier, Emanuel Rossetti, and Manuel Scheiwiller. Each artist will receive a contribution of CHF 20,000, and the works are expected to be displayed at the Kunsthalle Basel from September 5 to 19, 2021.
In a press release, the jury indicated that “The artistic practice of Pável Aguilar (1989) is closely related to his Honduran origins. Aguilar looks for ways to combine the indigenous and spiritual practices of his native land with the West’s classical music theory to reflect on the problem of cultural transfer caused by colonialism. Then he brings up self-made instruments from indigenous models -such as shells with holes- that sound through singing and breathing techniques of classical musical training or contain Rhinestones. He explores the tension between different cultural perspectives, the connection between ritual, body, and tradition.”
The jury made up of: Kunstkreditkommission Basel-Stadt (credit commission) and Valérie Knoll, director of Kunsthalle Bern (external jury 2020), sees something promising in the relatively emerging work of Pável Aguilar. “His practice is based on clear thematic pillars and, at the same time, it is open to more far-reaching searches within the field.”
The Werkbeiträge is awarded to individual artists as professional support, with the aim of financing and promoting the development of a work. The jury seeks to promote the development of emerging artists’ work, recognizing their potential with this award.
Pável Aguilar studied at the Escuela Nacional de Música and participated in the Escuela Experimental de Arte projects in Tegucigalpa. Likewise, he has presented his work in Nicaragua, Colombia, Argentina, Costa Rica, Venice, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Netherlands. In 2017, he won the Luis Javier Castro scholarship, which was awarded to Central American artists to carry out an artistic residency at the Escuela Flora Ars + Natura in Bogotá, Colombia. At the end of 2018, the Honduran artist was accepted into the Master of Visual Arts from the Basel Art Institute of the University of Applied Arts and Sciences of the country’s Northwest.
