Parque Ecológico Angelópolis

A new 57-acre ecological park named Angelópolis was inaugurated in the city of Puebla. An initiative of the government of Puebla, the park represents a truly innovative proposal in Mexico. It is indeed the first public park of this kind in the country, designed to include sculptural works and the most important collection of bamboos in the nation. Several criteria and conditions led to the selection of the artists involved in the project and the creation of their works. The sculptures could not be illustrative or representational of nature; but rather they had to suggest a simple evocation of the natural world. They required to be arranged in a manner that would facilitate the dialogue between them, and they also had to have furniture-like attributes that could be used by visitors—sitting on them and having playful interactions with them. All works also needed to be monumental and constructed with several of the stones found in the region (mostly marbles or onyxes).

Under the curatorship of Paul Levin, seven Mexican artists were offered unlimited creative freedom to participate in a unique project. Their participation resulted in the creation of sculptures. Each artist was free to choose the place on which to erect his/her work or works. This led to seven groups of sculptures: Arno Avilès (1 piece), Ernesto Hume (3), Saúl Kaminer (3), Perla Krauze (5), Marina Lascaris (2), Paul Nevin (3), and Kiyoto Ota (2). Visitors are invited to perceive from this variety of aesthetic approaches a unity that stems from the recreation of nature.
