“Together in Our Spirits” is the first solo exhibition of Oscar Murillo in Portugal, curated by Inês Grosso and Filipa Loureiro. Spread across the spaces of the Contemporary Gallery, the Hall, and the Chapel of the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Fundação Serralves, this comprehensive presentation brings together some of the most important bodies of work developed by the artist in recent years, as well as new works created specifically for the exhibition spaces.
Oscar Murillo considers “Together in Our Spirits” “a poetic gesture towards the collective.” This wide-ranging exhibition offers a glimpse into how a multifaceted exploration of themes such as collectivity, community, ritual, and spirituality, accompanied by considerations of social inequality, globalization, and geopolitical tensions, plays out in complex ways throughout his work in its many forms.
Oscar Murillo was also selected for the forthcoming commission at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, opening July 20, 2024. Murillo is presenting two other solo European exhibitions this year: Oscar Murillo: Masses is on view at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels, through April 28, 2024, and Rene Matić / Oscar Murillo. JAZZ. is on view at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, through July 28, 2024.
