Orbits, Decentrations, and Seams of the Globalization of Mexican Art

"Órbitas, Descentramientos y costuras de la globalización del arte mexicano" is a class organized by Museo Jumex and will be taught by curator and historian Roselin Rodríguez Espinosa.
The course seeks to trace through a series of events, works, contexts, and diverse actors how the process of globalization of Mexican art took place, also showing its reverses and seams. It will review exhibition events, various forms of artistic work, and key ideas that show an art field with multi-centric orbits. It will address studio cases from different regions of the country, the role of the curator, collecting, and the formation of some museums and galleries. Participants will be able to observe and relativize some dynamics of the center and periphery that have predominated in the panoramic ways of understanding local contemporary art.
Free class, via Zoom.
Sessions:
July 8, session 1: A city as a country. Five continents and one city. 1998-2000. Based on the case of the Mexican protobiennial: Salón Internacional de Pintura. Cinco continentes y una ciudad, the figure of the curator, will be reviewed, as well as strategies and works that served as a spearhead for a global opening of Mexican art.
July 15, session 2: Decentering and multiple orbits in the 2000s. This session seeks to relativize center-periphery dynamics to show multiple orbits in this period through events, spaces, artists, and practices that operated in decentralized logic.
July 22, session 3: Collective forms of artistic production. From the alternative spaces of the 90s to the in(ter)dependent spaces since 2012. This session will focus on the conditions of collective artistic work that increased since 2012, bridging contrasts and some continuities with the alternative spaces of the 90s and other artistic groupings of previous decades.
July 29, session 4: Convergences and ramifications of some genealogies of contemporary art. This last session will review and discuss some genealogies of contemporary art promoted from both public and private spheres to identify their usefulness and deviations in the present.
