OniriaNadín Ospina

The Museo de Artes Visuales of the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano is presenting, through June 26th, Oniria, an exhibition by Nadín Ospina (Bogotá, 1960). The work on exhibit, a multi-media installation, is a meditation on the world of dreams, memory, nostalgia, and delirium.

What unfolds here through a series of sculptural works arranged in a theatrical space, accompanied by a video-art work and a sound composition produced especially for this show, is an evocative succession of images where toys and popular images are a vehicle for expressing the freedom of the dream-world, unshackled from political commitments or moralizing content.

This new work by Nadín Ospina follows an entirely different path from his prior production, acclaimed for its mixture of entertainment-industry images—such as Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson— and elements of pre-Columbian art, as well as for its appropriation of Lego images in order to speak to current stereotypes of Latin America and its circumstance.

On this occasion, the artist has created a series of sculptural images based on dream-like experiences and memories. These works depict characters whose attributes become symbolic elements. Present here are: the marching woman, the Native American, the man in an overcoat, the altar boy, the nun, the penitent… and a number of architectural elements culled from the repertoire of kitsch culture.

A graduate from Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano (1982), Ospina's already extensive career has included exhibitions at various galleries and events in Europe, the United States, and Latin America, such as the Havana, Venice, São Paulo, and Lyon biennials.
