The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will present a retrospective of the textile work of Olga de Amaral (Colombia, 1932) until March 16, 2025. This exhibition features nearly eighty works, many of which have never been shown outside of Colombia.
The exhibition provides an overview of Amaral's work, showcasing her early explorations in textiles to her most recent three-dimensional pieces. Through techniques such as weaving, knotting, and braiding, the artist has expanded the boundaries of textile media, incorporating materials like linen, gold, and palladium. Her approach, which merges modernist principles with pre-Columbian art, challenges the perception of textile art as merely decorative.
The exhibition was curated by Marie Perennès, organizing the display around thematic axes rather than chronological periods. This aims to transcend linear narratives of Amaral's work, highlighting how her formal innovations respond to diverse influences, such as constructivist art and Latin American crafts. Additionally, the design of the exhibition space, led by architect Lina Ghotmeh, draws inspiration from the artist's sources of inspiration, creating an environment that connects the artwork with the surrounding landscape.
