Olga de Amaral

The Museo de Arte Moderno in Cartagena presents an exhibition by Colombian artist Olga de Amaral, whose work was the image of the most recent edition of the International Music Festival in Cartagena. The show was supported by the Fundación Salvi—also responsible for organizing the Festival—and by the Chambers of Commerce in Cartagena. Olga de Amaral presents work specially created for the tenth edition of the Festival. It consists of sculptural pieces created with fiber and gold foil that have been arranged so they appear to be suspended in the space, as well as a group of works created in recent years, all of which are inspired in pre-Columbian tradition. The exhibition will remain open to the public until February 2, 2016. Olga de Amaral was born in 1932 in the city of Bogota where she lives and works. She studied architectural design at the Colegio Mayor in Cundinamarca and textiles at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (United States). In 1965, de Amaral founded the Department of Textile Art of the Universidad de los Andes, in Bogota, which she directed for the first two years. In 1971, she was awarded the First Prize at the 22nd Salon of Artists in Medellin. A year later she won the Guggenheim Fellowship. She was awarded the Visionary Artist recognition by Museum of Art and Design in New York. Other recognitions include the tribute that she received in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Multicultural Gala in New York. Her work is part of several collections in museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
