The Fundación Cortés presents until the end of the year Ojos que tienen vista. Mirar más allá, curated by Gerardo Mosquera. The exhibition brings together works from the Colección Chocolate Cortés that focus on a gaze that goes beyond the external objective, taking as its starting point a colloquial phrase linked to Afro-Cuban religions, which speaks, precisely, of what is beyond what we see a priori.
The selection of 62 works in different media, created by 42 artists from 15 countries, is articulated through four thematic axes that unfold in conjunction with the colors in which the walls of the exhibition space have been painted. The first deals with the impact of African cultures and includes artists such as Belkis Ayon, Everald Brown, Canute Caliste, Jacques Hyppolite, Wifredo Lam, Ana Mendieta, and Zilia Sanchez.
A second group of works are centered on plants and landscapes, often approached with the imprint of the imaginary richness of Caribbean fables and stories, and included works by Frances Gallardo, Philip Moore, Antonio Martorell, Raquel Paiewonsky, Amelia Pelaez, Elizabeth Robles, and other artists.
The art of expressing emotions makes up the third axis that dialogues on emotions and personal experiences and exhibits works by Wilson Abreu, Wilson Bigaud, Rafael Ferrer, José Morales, and Inés Tolentino, among others.
Finally, the works that make up this group offer "other" visions of reality and present works by Alexandre Arrechea, Carlos Mérida, Priscilla Monge, and Jorge Pineda.
In the exhibition text, Mosquera explains: "The exhibition is an instrument to get to know the Caribbean and its culture in a more complex way. It also intends to discuss the power of artistic creation and its resources. The enriching visions gathered here are also a call to look creatively, as artists do. They help us to have sight."
The exhibition opened last December as part of the tenth anniversary of the Fundación Cortes. This non-profit project seeks to strengthen Puerto Rican and Caribbean values through the arts, humanities, and education.
