The Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) will auction at Sotheby's, the renowned auction house, a painting by artist Rufino Tamayo entitled Watermelon Slices. The painting by Tamayo renders with modernist tendencies a pile of watermelon slices. It was painted in 1950 and is regarded as one of the most important works by the Mexican artist. The work was included in the group of works with which Tamayo represented Mexico at the 1950 Venice Biennale. Additionally, the work possesses an emblematic significance for the artist who, as a child, used to sell that fruit in the market. The auction will be held on November 16, 2011, during what will be second "Latin American Art" auction of the year.
